It was a week of Rat Pack classics and actor-singer Jamie Foxx was the coolest mentor thus far. PHILIP LIM knows the contestants are now feeling the heat. MATT Giraud’s run in this competition has come to an end. He pooled the lowest number of votes.
Jamie Foxx believed My Funny Valentine was a big song and it prompted the Oscar winner to recall Matt for a second rehearsal.
Randy highlighted the common pitchy problem. Kara DioGuardi was basically unimpressed because of the missing emotional connection.
Mischievous Simon Cowell told Matt: “For me, it was the only authentic performance. You were absolutely brilliant.” That remark drew a bewildered look from Randy.
In case, anyone is wondering, Rat Pack refers to the group of Hollywood entertainers in the 1960s comprising Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr, Peter Lawford and Joey Bishop.
Kris Allen smoothened things along with The Way You Look Tonight. His vocals were smooth as honey. Jamie was so impressed with Kris that he said “this is the dude I want to do a record with”.
“Dude, for me personally, this is your best performance” was how Randy Jackson put it. Kara quickly jumped in and said “technically, you have set the standards so high”.
Only Simon said he wasn’t so enthusiastic as his colleagues. “I didn’t get the feeling that you would be able to win this competition,” said not-so-simple Simon.
Allison Iraheta, the only girl left in the competition, showed why she stayed when other female contestants had already gone home.
Someone To Watch Over Me gave Allison the opportunity to show the boys that even though she’s 17, she’s no pushover.
“Dude, that was a bomb, and I love it,” was how top dawg Randy put it. Kara paid Allison a huge compliment when she said “if that doesn't put you in the final, I don’t know what will”.
Simon asked Allison: “Do you think you can win this competition? I have a horrible feeling you could be in trouble tonight.” Does Simon know something we don’t?
I liked the way Jamie stared closely at Danny Gokey during rehearsal. Danny’s delivery of Come Rain, Come Shine was faultless.
Danny boy can only get better from now on. The crowd competed with the band for attention with a crescendo of applause.
“Let me tell you, you are the only one who can sing an album of this kind of songs,” said Randy.
“You had that Rat Pack swagger. It was unbelievable,” uttered a gushing Kara.
“What Kara said was 100 per cent correct,” said Simon. No argument from me.
The world must have felt pretty good when Adam sang Feeling Good.
Jamie summed it all up: “He’s gonna knock everyone’s head off."
Adam has got class and the looks of a rock star. The only person who could give him a run for his money is Danny Gokey.
I absolutely agreed with Randy that Adam is “in the zone”. Both Paula Abdul and Kara went off the rails with their praise for Adam.
Adam looked like he was in a league of his own when he made his entrance down the stairs. If you are not an Adam fan, you need counselling.
It’s Adam's title to lose. Having said that, it’s time to shout, “Danny, rev up the engine!”
Walk of Fame to Hollywood finals
THIS Sunday at 2pm, join in the search to find one lucky winner and a friend to watch American Idol Season 8 “live” at the prestigious Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles, United States courtesy of Star World and hitz.fm.
Since the beginning of April, fans of American Idol have been watching the show on Star World (Astro Channel 711) to get the weekly password and participate in the American Idol radio challenge with JJ and Ean on hitz.fm.
Following its April 23 last call, the 10 lucky finalists will proceed to the exciting “Walk of Fame to Hollywood” on-ground game to determine who is the true American Idol fan.
This Sunday, an additional three finalists will be selected in the Special Wild Card entry.
So if you are a true American Idol fan and think you know everything about the show, this is your chance to take part.
All you have to do is to come down to the Star World “Walk of Fame to Hollywood” at Centre Atrium, Cineleisure Mutiara Damansara (2pm) and get your numbered Golden Ticket at the Wild Card booth (all participants must hold a valid “travelling passport”).
There will also be plenty of American Idol merchandise and Star World goodies to be won, with special performances by Channel [V]’s AMP artistes Hujan and Pesawat.
Note: American Idol is aired every Wednesday and Thursday at 6pm and 8pm (repeat). The two-hour grand finale will air on May 21 at 8am “live” with repeats on the same day at 6pm and 8pm and on May 22 at 12.30am, 8am and 1pm.
